Gypsy moth is non-native invasive tree defoliator that feeds on over 300 species of trees and shrubs. And, unfortunately, it's here in Minneapolis -- but proper management can delay costly impacts to our local economy. The City of Minneapolis is proposing to manage gypsy moth in one 22-acre site in the Loring Park neighborhood. Similar to the 2018 Lowry Hills site, two applications of Bacillus thuringiensis v. kursaki (Btk) are being proposed; however, unlike the Lowry Hill site this block will be applied from the ground using ground application equipment and bucket trucks instead of aerially using low flying aircraft. Btk is a biological organic certified insecticide that affects only moth and butterfly caterpillars that are small and actively feeding at the time of application. It is not toxic to humans, mammals, bees, birds or fish. Have questions? Want to know more?
